The internet is a huge global system interconnected computer networks that connect billions of users worldwide. A huge system, the internet is often nicknamed 'The Network of Networks', it consists of public private, global and government networks which are linked with a broad array of electronic networking technologies.
Founded it early 60's as part of a government as part of the Sputnik project it really became commercialised in the 90's and by 2009 almost one quarter of the entire world used the internet. The music, film and shopping industries, among others are being revolutionised every single year and now it is now the basis of every day life. As well as businesses, communication is being reshaped by the electronic mail, one of the first major advances in early internet, as well as google documents and online forums.
The key idea of the internet is that it has no central governance and is purely run by the people who use it and the men and women creating the websites. The internet uses the standard 'Internet Protocol Suite' (TCP/IP). The internet is often considered to be the same as the internet, a misconception much hated by Tim Berners Lee, the creator, but the two are in-fact very different.
The Internet has made a huge social impact on the world as well, with social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter wreaking in millions of users from all across the globe. For the latest generation, our dependence on the internet is huge and for most children and young adults could not function without it.
